Licorice (liquorice) grows wild in Asia and Europe and is extensively cultivated in China, Russia, Spain, Persia, and India. The botanical name for licorice is Glycyrrhiza (Fabaceae). The genus Glycyrrhiza consists of 30 species, and many of them are found in China. The name is derived from the Greek words meaning “sweet root.”
